Hello everyone, today let's discover the history and architecture of the Haybes war memorial. This monument in the heart of the village is the size of the horrible tragedy who made the city of Haybes a martyred city of the Great War

The history of the War Memorial: 

During the First World War, August 24, 25 and 26, 1914, the German army, arrived in the Belgian Ardennes, continuing its invasion of France. Haybes is completely destroyed following bombings and fires, this in response to alleged shootings by civilians. Unfortunately, during this tragedy 596 houses are destroyed by fire and 70 people are massacred including soldiers and civilians, some of them just children. Moreover, during this war, 73 soldiers from the commune lost their lives. 

En October 1926, the Haybes war memorial is iinaugurated with a triumphal arch in white stone from France and the list of victims of the commune written on it. Lucien hubert (Keeper of the Seals), of the General Mariaux (governor of the Invalides) and of the Mayor Mr. Bouvart are present during this inauguration

The architecture of the Monument: 

Le sculptor of this work is L. RAUNERIt is important to mention the elements present on this monument. 

First, in the center we find bronze cast iron figures, they are placed on a fragment of the globe representing the FranceThis scene represents in the features of a Adolescent le French people
Carrying in his left arm Books symbolizing Law and Science, with his right hand he brandishes the torch of freedom
Protected by a lion, he walks under the wing of victory who guides him on his way.

The whole thing is placed on a base in blue stone from Givet, on which three bronze plaques are fixed. The first illustrates the Main Street of the town, devastated by flamess following the exactions of the enemy. The second presents the Homeland bowing before a grave. As for the third, it represents a machine gun section positioned on the left bank of the river, turning their gaze towards Haybes.
