A bit of history: The Forest Village

The history of Hargnies is one of its struggle and alliance with the forest. Born from a “essart” (clearing reclaimed from the woods) in the Middle Ages, the village has always lived off the forest: woodcutters, charcoal burners (“cayoteux”), clog makers…

Land of Resistance

This impenetrable forest also served as a refuge. During the Second World War, Hargnies was a stronghold of Ardennes MaquisMany resistance fighters (the “Maquisards”) used this forest as a rear base for their operations. Memorials and trails of remembrance now commemorate their courage.

By train:T The nearest train stations are those of Fumay et Given, but a car is then essential to get onto the plateau.
