A bit of history: The Forest Village
The history of Hargnies is one of its struggle and alliance with the forest. Born from a “essart” (clearing reclaimed from the woods) in the Middle Ages, the village has always lived off the forest: woodcutters, charcoal burners (“cayoteux”), clog makers…
Land of Resistance
This impenetrable forest also served as a refuge. During the Second World War, Hargnies was a stronghold of Ardennes MaquisMany resistance fighters (the “Maquisards”) used this forest as a rear base for their operations. Memorials and trails of remembrance now commemorate their courage.

The Village and its Plateau Architecture
Take the time to walk through the village. You won't see the blue stone of Givet, but the shale and red sandstone. The architecture is typical of the plateau: “block-house” farms robust, designed to withstand the climate, where men and animals lived under the same roof.
Saint Lambert's Church
In the center of the village, the Church of Saint-Lambert (18th century) is the landmark. Built with local stone, it is the heart of community life in this vast clearing.
The Mud Viewpoint

Please note: Hargnies is not Administrative staff on the Green Way (EuroVelo 19). The Green Way is in the valley, a 15-20 minute drive away. Hargnies offers a different, more sporty cycling experience: that of Mountain biking in the forest.

By staying in Hargnies, you can enjoy the best of both worlds: the absolute calm of the plateau and quick access to the attractions of the valley.
Fumay (15 minutes by car): Come down from the mountain for a thrilling experience! Visit TERRALTITUDE and its giant zip line (FantastiCable), the Slate City and the marina.
Givet (20 minutes by car): Head back north to discover the “Porte de France”, the imposing Fort of Charlemont and the RIVÉA aquatic centre.
Haybes (15 minutes by car): Take a gourmet break on the colourful quays of “Haybes la Jolie”.
The Belgian Ardennes: You are at the border. Push your exploration towards the Viroin-Hermeton Natural Park and the Belgian villages of the “boot” of Givet.

By car : Access to Hargnies is via exclusively by carThis is the price of tranquility. Take the D989 (the “Forest Road”) from Fumay or the D8051 then the D13 from Givet.
By train:T The nearest train stations are those of Fumay et Given, but a car is then essential to get onto the plateau.
parking: Parking is very easy and free throughout the village.
