La Pointe de Givet National Nature Reserve is a place to absolutely visit in the Ardennes tip. It has a wealth of geological, floristics et faunistic impressive.
La national nature reserve is in the Givet point, at the gates of the Belgium. It has an area of 354 hectares : .
This reserve was created thanks to the association of “The Valenne” who requests the classification as a National Nature Reserve en 1990. It was in 1999 and more precisely the March 4, 1999 that the procedure of classification completed.

The flora of the national nature reserve:
By its geographic location, relief of some sites and a hot and dry microclimates, the tip of Givet shelters a flora with a southern character remarkable. 461 species are recorded in the inventory of the national nature reserve.
In this inventory, 156 are “rare” or “very rare”, 11 are protected in Champagne-Ardennes et 35 species are registered on the Regional Red List of Threatened Species.
One of the most important species in the reserve is the orchide, 19 species are listed there, such as for example bird's nest orchid ou goat orchid.
The fauna of the national nature reserve:
360 animal species, mainly birds, bugs, Bats and lizards live in the reserve. Their habitats are of good quality thanks to the different natural environments.
In these 360 animal species, there is 20 species of mammals identified, 12 species of bats, 70 species of birds such as eagle owl, lulu lark…, ⅓ are on the Regional Red List of Threatened Species. Moreover; 171 insect species identified are listed in the faunal inventory.
The geology of the national nature reserve:
La Pointe de Givet National Nature Reserve has a diversity of rocks. What we find most there are the limestone rocks.
However, there are other types of rocks in the reserve, such as the shale, Stoneware, fossil, a former quarry of FluoriteFew limestone caves and Givetian.
The Givetien is a rock described by Jules Gosselet in 1879. He named it in reference to the town of Givet.
Sites and monuments present in the nature reserve:
In the nature reserve, 10 sites are present in 6 municipalities, that of Given, chooz, Times, Ranches, Fromelennesand of Charnois. Here are some of them:
- Mont d'Haurs à Given : This mountain located on the right bank of Givet, was once occupied by Napoleon's armies as well as by German soldiers during the First World War. Today, it is part of the national nature reserve of the Pointe de Givet.
- Fort Charlesmont in Givet : This impressive fort, built over 400 years ago, dominates the town of Givet.
- Porte de France à Given : The Porte de France designed by Vauban is located on route 8051. It is part of the fortifications of Givet listed as a historic monument in 1991.
- Gregory Tower in Givet : The Gregory Tower is an old watchtower. Initially it was called “Saint Gregory Tower”, this in relation to a chapel which was located nearby. It is part of the fortifications of Givet, a large part of which is the work of Vauban. Even if the interior is not open to the public, the tower offers an exceptional panorama of the city of Givet.
